Tips for Preventing Dehydration on a San Diego Summer Day

How many times have we heard, “drink more water?” Hydrating our bodies is critical for survival but most crucial during summer months. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 318 Americans die annually from heart-related illnesses. Signs of dehydration include: fatigue, loss of appetite, flushed skin, heat intolerance, headache, dark colored urine, and constipation. Adequate hydration will keep your summer activities safer and much more enjoyable.

  • The best way to prevent dehydration is to:

  • Drink water before you are thirsty

  • Consume at least 64 oz of water a day

  • If active or outside, drink at least 16 oz of water 1 to 2 hours prior to activity

  • Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages

  • Consume water-based fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, watermelon, and cabbage

On your walk, run or bike ride from Mission Valley to the beach this summer, make sure to keep hydrated!
